Ivory portrait of Alexander the Great

The ivory portrait of Alexander the Great, as well as the portraits of Philip II and of other members of the Macedonian court, decorated the bed of the chamber, an impressive construction ornamented with ivory, glass and gold. Ten out of the total fourteen heads decorating the bed are preserved in a very good condition. Constructed with the ultimate precision and care, entirely monumental despite their small size, they are considered to be among the most exciting studies of the human form known to us among the works of ancient art.
